Environment - Let the People See China's environmental crisis is now threatening economic growth. It is consistently voted a priority public concern in opinion polls. But years of poor enforcement of regulations and corporate disregard have resulted in public distrust and anger. The new Measures on Transparent Information could take China into a new era of pollution reduction, by strengthening public involvement in environmental governance. Ma Jun reports (chinadiaogue).

Energy

Energy - Long Journey, Small Steps Experts project that by 2010 the number of solar water heaters installed in China will equal the capacity of 40 large nuclear power plants. China Strategies LLC has launched an interactive map of China’s renewable energy projects. The map will soon include nearly 150 Chinese CDM projects. But there is also room for improvement at another stage: the combustion process itself, when fuel is burned. Two companies in Beijing are now focusing on improving this process, with impressive results. Yongfeng Feng reports (chinadialogue)

Health and Safety - Sink or Swim. Health and safety performance in Chinese factories, across many sectors, lags behind international standards. About 80% of the worldwide total work casualties occur in China. In China a life is lost for every RMB 1 million (US$130,000) of GDP - another 7 are injured. China's productivity and reputation are at risk. There is an urgent need for enlightened management attitudes, more investment, greater workplace capability and more rigorous operational control systems.

China Challenge.  How is China providing for a Sustainable Future? China is sucking in human, natural and financial resources on a global scale. It faces a bewildering array of environmental, social and economic challenges. A delicate balancing act is needed to stay afloat. The National People's Congress is talking about Sustainable Development. We review commentary and opinion on its plans.

The CSRchina Smart Business Exchange - where CSR meets Productivity. Business needs to share practical guidance on how to improve. China has lots of legislation but many bad news stories. CSR is still misunderstood and distrusted. What most factories need are good news stories and practical guidance. Brands, consultants, factories - share your experience, tools and guidance with us and we will place it on our web site for all to access, free of charge. The best examples will be highlighted in our monthly Update newsletter and also on our home page.
